Documents for Tourists
Tourists must present a valid passport and a driver’s license from their home country. A temporary local driving permit is also required and can usually be arranged through the rental provider. If the license is not in English, an International Driving Permit is recommended. Drivers must be at least 21 years old, and some providers may apply additional fees for younger drivers.
Documents for Residents
Residents renting a car in Saint Lucia must provide a valid Saint Lucian driver’s license along with a national ID card or proof of residency for verification. Most rental providers require drivers to be at least 21 years old, and some may have additional requirements depending on the vehicle type.
Driving Regulations
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road, and all passengers must wear seatbelts at all times. Speed limits are typically 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on open roads. Drivers should take extra care on narrow, winding routes, especially at night, and remain alert for pedestrians and animals on the road.
Child Seat Regulations
Children under 7 years old must use an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat suited to their age, height, and weight. Children under 12 years old are generally advised not to sit in the front seat.
Traffic Rules
Traffic in roundabouts has priority from the right, so you must give way accordingly. Avoid overtaking on bends or at intersections, and always yield to pedestrians at crossings and designated pedestrian zones.
Toll Roads and Fuel Policies
Saint Lucia has no toll roads, making driving simple and stress-free. Most rentals operate on a “full-to-full” policy, so you receive the car with a full tank and must return it the same to avoid extra charges. Fuel stations are available in major towns, along main roads, and near the airport, making refuelling easy before drop-off.
Navigation and Parking
Road signs can be limited, especially in southern areas of the island, so GPS navigation is strongly recommended. In towns such as Castries and Soufrière, parking spaces can be limited and may require payment depending on the area.
Driving Conditions and Insurance
Saint Lucia is a mountainous island with steep inclines, sharp bends, and blind corners, so extra caution is needed and travel times should be planned accordingly. All vehicles are also required to carry at least third-party liability insurance.
Airport Facilities and Services
SLU airport has a small but clean arrivals area with essential passenger services. Facilities include ATMs, currency exchange, basic shops and cafés, and free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal. Assistance is available for passengers who need support, helping ensure a smooth arrival experience.
Car Rental Desk Locations at SLU
Car rental desks are located in a designated area near the arrivals hall, not inside the terminal. After collecting your luggage, follow the “Car Rental” signs and walk a short distance outside to reach the desks. Once you complete the paperwork, your vehicle will be ready nearby for a quick and easy pickup.
